Guitarist Martin Simpson performs "I Cannot Keep from Cryin' Sometimes" at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California on November 19, 2008.

The performance is one of a five-part series of slide guitar concerts presented in conjunction with the Museum's special exhibition, "The Magic & Mystery of Slide Guitar."

The song is Simpson's adaptation of Blind Willie Johnson's "Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Cryin' Sometimes."

  • whats in his right hand?

  • @lisa67iz That device is called an EBow. When held over a plucked string, it sustains the string's vibration using a magnetic field. Martin explains it in the next video in this series "Martin Simpson - Concert Conversations Part 1" at about the 2:47 mark. You can also learn more at EBow.com.

  • This man puts metal shredders to shame.

    And me too.

  • Los muertos will wake from their epochal sleep if they ever hear this played above their graves. They will come back from the big sleep to settle all their scores. Martin Simpson is a wizard. Some of his tones conjur up scenes of the afterlife of all the souls who were given short shrift and settled into the clay too soon...

  • @museumofmakingmusic theyre nifty little things. like a little feedback machine. Never seen anyone use a slide with one before. yet another way Martin Simpson makes me want to give up [or practise more]

  • this is a master musician doing the work that needs to be done, in my opinion.

  • I`ve bought many Martin Simpson albums and they are all brilliant. This performance is extraordinary. Thanks to museum of making music for this and the other wonderful clips.

  • awesome... just when I think I've seen it all

did this guy do the theme for the 'Firefly' TV series by any chance? Sure sounds like it.

  • Dear Martin, yuz one of my greatest inspirations as i twang my strings every day, how ya got there (wherever you are inside when you play) you amaze, amuse and stagger me, but sniffing around I'm unable to suss out what Tuning you play this in, despite the Capo on the 3rd! Pllez enlighten do. Then I can spend the next 4 years trying to play it like you before being IMPERTINENT enough to do so in front of others, lol
