A quick video I made in honor of Lo Armistead and Winfield Hancock. Just pictures because I haven't gotten around to moving all my clips from the movie Gettysburg onto the laptop I'm using now. Maybe I'll get around to that eventually.
For anyone who doesn't know the story, Armistead and Hancock were friends before the outbreak of the Civil War. However, Armistead chose to leave the Union army when his state, Virginia, left the union. Hancock stayed with the Union. The song, Kathleen Mavourneen, was the song that they played right before they split up. It was at this time that Armistead also told Hancock, "If ever I raise my hand against you, may God strike me dead." They faced each other across the battlefield for the first, and only time, on July 3, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. Both were wounded during the battle, and never saw each other again. Armistead died two days later.
The version of the song used in this video is performed by the 97th Regimental String Band. Many of the pictures are taken from the movie Gettysburg, others are pictures I found online.
I do not own any of the pictures, or the song. This video was made for the enjoyment of others and to honor two wonderful men.
The story of their friendship is beautiful yet heartbreaking. At least their friendship was a true one, that the test of time nor a war could sever. I have studied both of these men at great length and Armistead's story has always tugged at my heart. His life story was heartbreaking. Lost two wives and two children, developed erysipelas(had to have surgery) and his family home in Virginia burned, nearly destroying everything, all withing a 6 yr timeframe. Story fit for a novel. Bravo clip!

have never seen the entire film only on youtube, their friendship must have been very strong, but they had different views in life. Sad that they had to go their separate ways
