Premier views new trains and makes fares announcement

John Brumby
Premier of Victoria

Brumby: I think in terms of improving security, security of passengers on the system, this new digitally based CCTV system will help significantly in that regard. I'm also pleased to announce today that public transport fares will remain unchanged through 2010. So there will be no increase on January 1st. Normally we would be increasing fares in line with inflation but given that the inflation rate is less than 1%, the Government's view was that there should be no in increase in fares. That's good news for commuters, it's good news for passengers. Across the system of course it means there are savings to commuters of around $4 million - $5 million over the year from the fact that there is no fare increase.

I think all of that if you look at the measures we are taking, the increased services, the timetable changes, the increased maintenance, the new transport operators and the new trains that are coming into the system, all of these things are designed to steadily improve the performance of our rail and public transport system over the year. So I think it is a good news day for public transport. Good news in terms of more rolling stock, good news in terms of the CCTV system and increases security, and good news with a freeze on public transport fares.

Lynne Kosky
Minister for Public Transport

Kosky: It is a great day today for public transport commuters; theyĆll be starting to see from December the first of the new trains on the track with the new configuration, more room inside and much better operations. But they will also see no fare increase over the next 12 months. So it really is terrific. Whilst we are also seeing the infrastructure works that are currently underway we'll be seeing the completion of those. So we will see more services, better services for commuters and of course they won't be paying any extra over the next 12 months. So it is a great news day for public transport commuters.
