Helles Bock is on tap at the Lancaster Beer & Wine Gallery just in time for the First Day of Spring!! Helles Bock -- Bock is a traditional early spring time lager. The Germans have codified the variety as Starkbier (Strong Beer). Bock beer should have a beginning gravity of at least 16 degrees plato. This one comes in at about 16.2 degrees plato. There are several variations of bock beer ranging from light to dark. The Helles variety is a relatively new variety in comparison to other Bocks. Helles means 'pale' or 'light' in German. This Bock is copper in color, produced from the lightly roasted caramel malts used during the brewing process. A malty beer with refreshing hints of hop on the nose and finish. I use Willamette hops for the bittering charge and Hallertau to finish it off. A touch of local, fresh Dutch Gold clover honey is used to boost the gravity. A very refreshing, easy drinking lager, perfect for a spring day. Prosit! (Music by Mark De Rose and the Way Home for the music. Performing at BrewFest 2012! www.parenfaire.com)
