This video refers to the 1989 ASAS (Wings) team. This footage, never released in Portugal, shows in and out views of the display. The aircraft used was the T-37C Tweet similar to the B model - used by the USAF - except for some avionics, fittings for weapon delivery and wing tip tank capability for added range on navigation and ferry flights. 102 Sqnd in Sintra Air Base was the home of the Team. The pilots were selected among the squadron Instructor Pilot force and maintained their commitment and involvement in pilot training for the Portuguese Air Force. That meant that training and displays were performed outside the standard duty hours and represented a part-time activity, unlike other well known aerobatic teams. The team was composed by eight pilots, (six flying plus a Logistics Officer and a Public Relations Officer).
The aircraft was particularly difficult to fly in formation aerobatics due to the slow responsiveness of the engines, low speed brake and flight control effectiveness, lousy air conditioning and lack of G protection and pressurization. Those pilots who, world wide, had the opportunity to fly the Tweet can, above all, appreciate the physical and mental demand required to perform under these conditions. Enjoy!
