"As Bossman Ed Annunziata sits at the head of a simple meeting table, humbly playing off the significance of his goals with the Dreamcast iteration of Chakan: The Forever Man, you may occasionally muster up some cynicism towards the loftiness of his goals, but one thing is certain: You'll never doubt the desire of this team to create an experience unlike any other before it.

"We believe there are three types of games in this industry," says an animated Annunziata, "you've got the games you can pick up immediately and start playing. Then come the games that you play for about an hour, and you finally start to get the hang of 'em. Then...then you've got the games you play all the way through, and you still don't feel like you've done it all. That's the type of game we want to create. As for everyone else...sorry, but this game just isn't for you."

[...]

Unlike its Genesis predecessor, which was quite possibly the most difficult, intense action title ever made, the new Chakan will not be a hack 'n slash platformer for the ages. Oh, no. This time around, it's a thinking man's game, and the key is observation. Encounters with secondary enemies will be much less important, and each level's boss will basically be a game to itself, where it's a fight to the finish between two clever, powerful beings hell-bent on one another's destruction. Like any good duel, Chakan will be all about knowing your opponent, and more importantly, taking him off-guard. As Annunziata puts it, "you wanna see it before it sees you, because if it sees you first, you're dead."

[...]

And not only will we be blessed with a game that still knows the importance of the boss encounter, but one that also understands that repetition is for the unimaginative. Each level will tell a different tale of Chakan's one-man war with the supernatural, and as you travel through time you'll witness both a change in your arsenal, but one with the dynamics of evil and fear as well. Chakan will start off with his standard double-bladed stance and a cocky grin, but as the game progresses, you'll see a host of new weapons, from axes to lasers, and not to be bested by their opponent, enemies will become more and more advanced with each passing stage. Echoing to the original, Ed promises that each level will become more and more detailed, and it will be more and more difficult. "Each level will be a new experience, in and of itself. The weapons you have will progress with the technology of the day, but each set of arms will be nailed to that time period. You'll have to learn to deal with the weapons you've got."

  • I loved making this game. One day I will get Chakan on next generation platforms. We did this demo for the dreamcast. Thanks for all the great comments. If Chakan on the genesis kicked your ass, sorry about that. :)

  • I was lucky enough to work at Sega when this game came through QA and I was never quite able to beat it. I did get to the final boss a couple of times, but just didn't have enough time with the game to knock it out. One of my greatest regrets in gaming... As for this demo, I worked at AndNow while Ed was pitching it around and we were definitely excited, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be. I don't think Blood Omen had any direct connection to this, unless those guys happened to be inspired by it.
