  • The other thing you didn't mention (not that the video DOESN'T kick arse, I love watching your stuff FP) is that John Petrucci and Steve Morse DON'T have good technique. I mean they can play stuff that I can't etc. etc. but the amount of tension in their playing is just ridiculous.

  • @jessicaclarkespants Honestly, I'd say they still have excellent technique, they both have great control over dynamics, string crossing, they're very accurate, very clean, very quick... the only reason they're that fast is because they've successfully eliminated lots of tension.

  • @FreepowerUG Hmm, don't they both have carpal tunnel or something similar?

  • @jessicaclarkespants Steve Morse has carpal in both hands, Trooch doesn't have it at all afaik. I'm not saying they couldn't be a lot looser - but they're already looser and a lot more proficient than the vast majority of guitar players. I would be totally locked up at waaaaay lower tempos than those guys, they're really good pickers. Just because they do a small thing I consider wrong doesn't invalidate their whole playing style.

  • The last point alone makes this video worth watching, Good stuff!

  • @Rg1527 e-rep to u man. ^_^

(and for waiting through the rest of the worthless stuff for the end. :P )

  • God i cant remember how many times you've helped me out massively man :P thanks

  • i remember reading a huge thread about this on UG, good times

  • also quite alot of people will achor for say slower and rythym playing, and then for speed picking take the achor away eg, rust cooley. also david shankle/shenkle? is a freakishly fast achoring alternate picker.

  • i dont think the statement "anchoring is bad" can be true in all circumstances. i kinda have a progressive anchoring technique where my pinky doesn't stick out, it simply carries some of the weight of my hand which is held in the same position as yours, you couldn't even tell it was being achored unless you were really close up. i find lightly brushing the guitar with the nail of my pinky when i speed pick actually takes some stress and weight off my hand.

  • @FreepowerUG I didn't mean it like that =[

We talked about this in detail yesterday lol :P
