Every night for the nine days before Christmas, hoards of kids come by our house caroling or at least the Veracruz, Mexico equivalent of it called "La Rama" which means "The Branch". The kids carry a large tree branch decorated with balloons and ribbons and chant a long poem about the Christmas story. However there is not a melody in sight though I guess there is supposed to be one. The kids bang on an interesting variety of noise makers, act a little crazy, and present a donation can when they are through. This is one of the few times in the year that the kids can make a little free spending money for themselves so it is mighty popular. This custom is unique to Veracruz - there is nothing quite like it.
