Well they make new delay units that have looping capabilities that do the same thing, allow you to loop a signal and then allow all the new signal to bypass the timed loop.
He may have had someone mod his DD3,so he wouldnt have to keep the pedal depressed but perhaps he only uses the DD3 to color his sound and not as the looping device, Im not sure.
I just stand in one place and keep the pedal pressed, lol. Works for me, as my basement is my audience!

@PIlotrcm i new that as i have a dd3 myself but how does he keep it going when he takes his foot off?

Eric Johnson did this well before JB did...
Some modern delay units do it as well...but Joe and Eric both use the Boss DD-3 digital delay pedal.
I use the same, its a great pedal and it has a "HOLD" feature on it. You play something for the time set, then press and hold the pedal. It will continue the repeated signal until you take your foot off the pedal. The MAJIC is that all other signals bypass the pedal, while the repeat is still going softly in the background.

how does he do that loop thing on his delay pedal

just watched a rusty cooley vid and this makes rusty look like a retard, joe plays with so much soul that he makes rusty look like a little kid who play scales fast but doesn't know real guitar
Not gonna lie, I'm a huge metal head/metal guitarist, but blues is the best thing ever invented. EVER. And Joe Bonamassa makes me proud to listen to and play blues :-D

@Heeya13 Considering without blues you wouldnt have metal, I would appreciate it too.
