@mebamme They're mostly for the percussion, as the user below said. However, if you play a song that has a lot of distinct notes (eg. any major piano piece), then they grey blocks will typically line up with each individual note.
It's a bit hard to notice unless you're actually playing it, but once you're in the game, it really all boils down to following the rhythm.
How are those block placements even remotely related to the rhythm of the song?
(My only guess is they aren't supposed to be, but that'd kind of defeat the game's purpose. :/)
