  • Thanks Zackrossi, it's nice to think that the Malaysian people are grateful to the likes of my old man, and all the thousands of other Commonwealth soldiers, New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. My father died in 98, I've still got his medal. Thanks again mate for your comment.

  • My old man was also a signalman, at the back, and he told me that when all the other troopers had tramped through the swamps, he being at the back was nearly up to his neck, what with 50 pounds of radio. Attached to the Suffolk regiment chasing the bearded Terror of Kajang. Do you know, all the time he was there he never did see any bandits, only dead ones on a pole he took to the police station. Mind you it was real dangerous he told me.

  • How about those jungle carbines and the Bren gun? All time proven weapons that can't be beat, even today. Thanks to all the vets that put their time in the jungles, far from home.

  • @Enquiringmind777 we appreciate the sacrifices done by the commonwealth troops here in malaysia. if its not because of the gurkhas and the commonwealth troops we wouldn't be able to defeat communism and move forward. on behalf of my family we thank u (and i believe i also speak for all malaysian).

  • @cinemascene said an American !!!

  • I have a bit of the malayan kit and was talking to some malayan crisis veterans and they said they ditched some of the kit and instead used a quick release parachute belt which they hung their pouches from, also they attached rubber bits onto the underneath of their cross strap yokes etc etc, interesting stuff though!

  • @cinemascene Erm... Vietnam ???

  • @malayneum Or, one of those countries where they think having sex with a baby will cure them of AIDS?

    None? what you live in a democracy? Ah! so you are ignorant through choice and not because of the state. Do you still think the world is flat?

    You lose. Again.

  • @malayneum I thought this was about communism's role in the future. The Malaya Emergency is long over, 1960. I take it you live in a communist country? Which one? The one with free trade cities that kills Muslims and students; the one that is ruled by an upper class rebel with fifty houses; the one were the people are starving and sinks other countries warships; the one promoting itself as an alternative to Thailand for holiday makers cash;

  • @rdjhardy Why are you so upset? Face it. You people have never won the war with Communists. Stop acting like you are some sort of freedom fighter for the Malay natives. You westerners are no more than just hungry imperialists trying to defend your assets and capitals in Malaya. No more no less.

  • @rdjhardy Thanks for the info. I knew the weapons had a good reputation but did not realize that it took sten mags.

  • @bcs436 The aussies developed it, because they thought the right angle on the sten-gun would snag in the bush. The reason it's top mounted is because the magazine used's, the sten's, spring was very weak and would not feed properly if underneath.

    I agree it looked odd, but the gun performed so well I believe it was still in use until the '70s
