Intelligent Bacteria -- Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an artistic research project, manifested in the form of an acoustic and performative installation that responds to the high number of poisonings and deaths of alcohol consumers in Indonesia. The unsterilised processing of alcohol, conducted by large sectors of the society, produces methanol that is unsafe to consume. Traditional and modern technology of fermentation needs an appropriate method to produce a safely consumable alcohol. The project is a collaborative art and biotechnology work, using DIY and open source technologies intended to give the public an awareness of the local traditional culture of alcohol, and to distribute knowledge of safe alcohol fermentation process in order to produce alcoholic drinks with the richness of Indonesian tropical fruit in an affordable and safe way.

Intelligent Bacteria is one of the research program in the Education Focus Program (EFP), which focuses on the collaboration between art and science. Intelligence Bacteria have a main goal to bridge the practice, theories and innovative ideas from the fields of art and science to actualize it's application based on generic infrastructure and affordable technologies. This platform was built from a common vision to develop and integrate the two fields of disciplines to find new forms of innovation which refers to the needs of interdisciplinary actions for the wide society.

  • Like Romero said, it's not bacteria, it's a fungus. Also, in my limited experience, methanol is really only dangerous once you start distilling or when there is a strong presence of pectin. I could be wrong though.

  • s cerevisiae is not a bacteria
