http://www.pbs.org/billmoyers This preview of an upcoming Bill Moyers Journal episode gives viewers an intimate look at how deployments of National Guard troops to Iraq affect the state Governors' ability to swiftly respond to domestic disaster at home and impact the families left behind. Traveling to New Jersey, the Journal follows families preparing for the deployment of nearly half of New Jersey's National Guard to Iraq. Says Guardsman Roy Parks on deploying to Iraq, "It's a hard life being in the military. Once you're in, you realize it, and you get so attached to it and everything, it just becomes second nature, and then you don't want to quit. But you're never realizing how much you hurt your family and other people when things like this come up." Airs Friday, September 5, 2008 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). • please post Kathleen Hall Jamieson's interview on the same day with Bill Moyers

that should be a top video on yt

  • Active duty, uniformed, component(s) of DoD have been downsizing since 1974. DoD's civilian component has been downsizing, outsourcing and privatizing during the same timeframe, most aggressively during Republican administrations. The National Guard's growing role - as depicted here - is one of the results. It's getting national defense 'on the cheap' for voters/taxpayers... without a thought that there's a lot of overlap among voters/tax-payers/military(active)/military(NG)/DoD civilians.

  • Thank you, PBS for censoring comments. Some 'public broadcasting' company.

  • And how many of these families will be blown apart in Iraq?

  • This sucks for the national guard troops. The only thing they are guarding by being in Iraq is the reputation of the US being a superpower. And the fact that they do it for so little pay makes it that much worse, especially when you look at how much private mercenaries like Blackwater can make.
