Active duty, uniformed, component(s) of DoD have been downsizing since 1974. DoD's civilian component has been downsizing, outsourcing and privatizing during the same timeframe, most aggressively during Republican administrations. The National Guard's growing role - as depicted here - is one of the results. It's getting national defense 'on the cheap' for voters/taxpayers... without a thought that there's a lot of overlap among voters/tax-payers/military(act
ive)/military(NG)/DoD civilians. -

This sucks for the national guard troops. The only thing they are guarding by being in Iraq is the reputation of the US being a superpower. And the fact that they do it for so little pay makes it that much worse, especially when you look at how much private mercenaries like Blackwater can make.
