VANOS is BMW's answer to variable valve timing. It is a combined hydraulic and mechanical camshaft control mechanism, managed by the car's DME engine management system.

At the lower end of the engine-speed scale, the intake valves are opened later, which improves idling quality and smoothness. At moderate engine speeds, the intake valves open much earlier, which boosts torque and permits exhaust gas re-circulation inside the combustion chambers, reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Finally, at high engine speeds, intake valve opening is once again delayed, so that full power can be developed. VANOS operates on the intake camshaft in accordance with engine speed and accelerator pedal position.

VANOS significantly enhances emission management, increases output and torque, and offer better fuel economy. The latest version of VANOS is double-VANOS, used, among others, in the new M3.

The VANOS system is based on an adjustment mechanism that can modify the position of the intake camshaft versus the crankshaft. Double-VANOS adds an ....

BMW is one of the most reliable brands out there. It is part of the ultimate Rat-Pack in the automotive world: BMW, Mercedes, Honda and Subaru. It is not opinion, it's what every mechanic knows to be true. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for sharing... For the money it's tough to beat BMW and those makers of the same caliber, except probably Porsche. They last forever if maintained properly, hold their value, exceptional technology, safe and as fast or as slow at the track depending on how much you spend on it. Only the Porsche 911 Turbo 4 outshines all others. Why? For the money, although new in the $100K, no other model will deliver as much on the track, unless you buy a Formula-1 or one of the exotics.

just cuz its one of the fan boy rat-pack doesnt mean shit for reliability. they're great cars but overrated imo. They have good creature comforts and of course the famous bmw badge but are moderately slow for the money and have their share of problems. not a hater just sayin

Look at any poll or survey regarding reliability and German cars score really poorly, especially in the UK.
