This is a S-Video capture of the Uzebox playing a movie @ 30fps (160x96) with 15Khz sound. Video and sound data is streamed from a standard SD/MicroSD card. Due to the fixed 256 color palette, dithering is used to enhance the overall look. Movies are converted using as mix of Photoshop batch and custom tools. Interestingly, playing the video in low quality mode will give a better picture because of the "smoothing" caused by Youtube's codec.

The Uzebox is a game console made out of only two chips (an ATmega644 and an AD725 RGB-to-NTSC converter) and a bunch of resistors. Both hardware and software are released under the GPL V3. Look at my other videos for more information on the Uzebox.

  • nice. why the dither though?

  • @DanFrederiksen Due to it's 8-bit nature, the Uzebox has a hardware fixed 256 color palette. Not surprisingly, we have to dither to approximate the full color range of normal movies. :)

  • How much SD Card Memory did the Video Use?

BTW: That was sweet, i'm building one soon :)

  • 168megs! It's naturally an uncompressed stream. :)

  • Reminds me of the full motion videos you would see on the 3DO or the Sega Disk Drive attachment...s

  • Not bad for a 8-bit mcu with 4K of RAM eh?! :-)

  • Trailer of cyberpunk movie, on 8 bit console.

    Win.

  • @ObiTrev Haha yes!

  • Reminds me alot of the early full video games on PCs and systems like the 3DO and the Sega CD. For me though it reminds me of Mad Dog McCree... I miss that game.

  • This is the best project i have seen so far.
