Assemblyman Alessi asks Paterson to continue New Yorks commitment to bio-fuels

Assemblyman Marc Alessi (D,I-Shoreham) held a press conference April 28, 2010, asking Governor Paterson to keep an executive order dating back to the Pataki administration on the books (EO 142). The order directed state agencies and authorities to purchase and utilize biodiesel in their fleets.

New York State has the resources necessary to be a leader in the development of alternative energy sources like bio-fuels, said Assemblyman Alessi. We can be an example to the rest of the country and help drive innovation at the federal level.

Promoting the use of bio-fuels will help grow our economy, creating a new market for our farmers and new job opportunities in alternative energy production here in New York.

Governor Patersons order to back away from this is a giant step backwards, state Senator Darrel Aubertine said. We need to send a message to an industry that has already invested in this technology that we support it, and we are going to stay the course to ensure continued industry growth and job creation.

Alessi is the sponsor of a bill that would codify the orders intent into law (A.4794) and several others that would increase the usage of bio-diesel throughout the state. One such bill would require a blend of bio-diesel fuel in residential heating oil (A.4795), while another would
extend the bio-fuel production tax credit (A.8999), providing continued incentives for New York businesses to produce bio-fuels and invest in bio-fuel technology. A third bill would provide a tax credit to farmers who use bio-diesel fuel for the sole operation of their farm equipment
(A.4856).

According to Alessi, using bio-diesel fuel in state operated vehicles will not only decrease emissions, it will also create jobs and has the potential to lower fuel costs in the future as the economys dependence on foreign oil decreases.

Its important that we send a continuous message that alternative energy is important, Assemblyman Fred Thiele said. We need to plan for our energy future and that requires the use of alternative energy sources like bio-diesel.
