http://documentaryparadise.com Status Anxiety discusses the desire of people in many modern societies to "climb the social ladder" and the anxieties that result from a focus on how one is perceived by others. De Botton claims that chronic anxiety about status is an inevitable side effect of any democratic, ostensibly egalitarian society. De Botton lays out the causes of and solutions to status anxiety as follows
This was a good series, until De Botton starts giving Christianity undue credit for stating that goodness is unrelated to status. This is not a Christian idea at all, and I think De Botton dropped the ball hugely on this one. Alas, this is what you get after centuries of Christian indoctrination. It will still take quite a while before we are finally able to shake off the influence of that nefarious religion for good.

So the conclusion here is that we should believe things, regardless of their truth value, simply because it makes us feel better?

Americans fail horribly at assessing the reality of their country - it is no different from anywhere else, the rich cling to wealth and the poor struggle to feed themselves. Jesus wouldn't have stood for this!
