watch the austrian documentary about this, the sailors werent given the order to abandon ship
-
@Chrinik everybody could swim, because it was expectations in austro-hungarian navy. However, the most ww1 era navy the swimming was not expectation from sailors.
-
@WELLBRAN Because you wouldn´t expect such a huge ship to topple over that fast, so they, of course, waited for the other ships to come near to rescue them (seawater is cold, and most probably, some couldn´t swim)...they only started to panic when the ship started to turn over faster.
And "unhardened" sailor would have probably jumped into the water as he heard "WE´VE BEEN HIT!"

holy crap! their battleship is sinking and they are just walking around the deck

@DeltaRaptor21 Yes every sinking is different maybe staying on the upturned hull eliminates that effect and she turned right over I should have asked my Dad He went through this and was one of the last men to get away from his warship. and it seems that this crew were aware of what was going to happen and they all seemed to get on the hull, whereas HMS Barham went over slower but exploded. unless you have been through this you can only guess what its like
-
@WELLBRAN I am not sure about this, but I think that it has to do with the water current that pulls everything downwards(formed at the edges of the ship, thus the middle stays safe). So, you either get off the ship early and go away away from the ship as fast as possible so you won't get pulled, or wait till the last part of the ship (or at least the main deck, I think) has sunk with the boat nearby so you can float away safely with a behemoth diving underneath you.

Commander Luigi Rizzo, under heavy fire, made a direct attack and launched his 2 torpedoes from 100 mt, targeting the Szent Istvan. The 2nd MAS, targeted the Tegetthof hitting it, but his torpedoes did not explode, Rizzo's ones instead sank the other Austrian battleship.
That the sailors of the Szent Istvan may rest in peace. They were Croatian or Slovenian, but many of them, from Istria, Dalmatia or Adria, brought Italian names.
-
Commander Rizzo, together with a 2nd MAS attacked the group made of the two Battleships Szent Istvan and Tegetthof plus 8 to 10 destroyers.
-
We should not forget that this proud Flagship was sunk by an Italian MAS, which means a 30 feet powerboat armed with two torpedoes.

@qooe1 Gotcha, so the noble hoouses during the Mongel invasion wasn't good enough? Or the Hussars that were noted as the best calvarly by the prussians and even took berlin with 5000 hussar to ransom it back to the prussians? I don't see how their pride has fallen.
strange how even hardened sailors try and stay on theri sinking ship for as long as possible when they should be getting off it see how they are not launching any boats here or getting in the water when there are other ships present they are simply walking around the deck.

@riccardino1212
Why? Cos i'm in my homeland and i'm not the one that should go away, the spaghettifresser invaders are those that have to leave. We are "cotoletta alla milanese" fresser (oh look, what a coincidence, here our "flag" dish, the most popular one, is a wiener schnitzel.... ), so YOU should f the shut up and leave us alone.
Actually independence is the best, but EVERYTHING is better than being pointed out by people as compatriot of "some kind" of people...
