Mills College Professor Joseph Kahne discusses his research about the impact of digital media on today's youth. Director of the Mills Civic Engagement Research Group, Kahne has studied the connection between students' participation with digital media and their level of civic engagement. Most recently, his research has yielded some surprising findings and he notes that, contrary to conventional wisdom, kids who appear to be using games and social media strictly for entertainment, are actually building bridges and important relationships. The study finds that online activity can lead to greater civic engagement such as volunteerism, community problem-solving, and protest activity. Kahne's study also found that students who were required by their teachers to conduct online research on political issues, or divergent viewpoints, were much more likely to use the web in more meaningful ways during their own time.
