The Quilliam Foundation calls itself "the world's first counter-extremism think tank" and was founded by two former Hizb-ut-Tahrir members, Maajid Nawaz and Ed Husain. With government funding and supporters like Melanie Phillips and Michael Gove, the Quilliam Foundation has been criticised for serving a pro-government/ Zionist/ neo-conservative agenda, and for seeking to de-politicise Muslims and Islam by demonising so-called 'Islamists'.

A government minister, quoted in The Times (20/1/09):

"Ed [Husain] and Quilliam have very little support in the mainstream Muslim community ... They have much more enemies than friends. But [Ed Husain is] loved by some ministers, which is why his organisation is having so much money thrown at it. And the Government knows that if you want a Muslim to say pro-government things, then Quilliam is the answer."

  • Maajid Nawaz has absolutely no reason to be a 'government stooge'. He denounced the narrative upon his return to the Western world; that is, before he and his organization received money from the government. He's incredibly articulate and argued substantial points in this interview. Why can't we just hear the interview without the biased captions? And the fact that he isn't too popular with the prominent Muslim population doesn't mean his arguments should be dismissed.

  • @juju52291 ... Why wouldn't he have reason to be a 'government stooge'? Why wouldn't he want his very vocal agenda given funding and political clout by the government? Plenty of ignorant people are articulate; It's just a useful tool in attempting to convince people of your credibility. The fact he's not popular with the Muslim population indicates he doesn't understand the perspective of Muslims, or be given the amount of airtime he is over and above other equally articulate Muslims.

  • @oclandestin Like I said, from the start, he denounced the Islamist narrative well before he received money from the government. He has been battling extremism for a long time right now. And again, just because he's not popular with the masses doesn't mean he's wrong. The Nazi's (another extremist group) convinced a lot of Germans that Jews and ethnic minorities were the cause of their suffering. When people are scared and angry, they tend to forsake rational thought.

  • @juju52291 ... Your first point only proves that his viewpoint aligned him well with the New Labour government (who aligned themselves with the US Neo-Cons) at the time. Note, we haven't heard much from Quilliam in the UK since the general election in May. And what an interesting point about the Nazis, because if you listen to the 'war on terror' rhetoric that's still around, especially in the media, then it's clear that Muslims and Islam are being demonised just as the Nazis demonised the Jews.

  • Maajid Nawaz must have been seriously brainwashed in Egypt. Or else offered a great deal of money.

If he is opposing - as he seems to imply when explaining his "4-point identifier" criteria for identifying 'extremists' - the implementation of Shari'ah & therefore re-establishment of Khilafah, he is putting himself effectively out of Islam.

After that, there is no more debate to be had with Quilliam. They represent something other than Islam and thus should be denounced right left and centre

  • Majid Newaj, a government paid puppet.

  • Its a Gold digging organisation. Bunch of idiots sucking up to the government and helping zionist media. I hope when we deal with the BNP EDL UKIP we should then deal with Quilliam Foundation and make sure people expose them.

  • @oclandestin I agree that Muslims have been demonized in the media. However, I hardly believe it's part of a political agenda. I think it has more to do with ratings. People tune in more often if there's a story involving terrorists and these terrorists tend to be Muslim. What they don't report are the acts of terror on the 'other' side (Israel, NATO etc.). but either way, extremism is not the answer. Whether it's blowing up the Twin Towers or the Gaza Strip.
