The Sukhoi Su-15 (NATO reporting name 'Flagon') was a twin-engine interceptor aircraft developed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s to replace the Sukhoi Su-11.
As one of the V-PVO's principal interceptors, the Su-15 was involved in a number of incidents with foreign aircraft. One such attack was in 1978, when Korean Air Flight 902 was attacked over Murmansk by a PVO Su-15. Although the civilian aircraft survived the missile hit, two passengers were killed, and the damaged plane subsequently made a forced landing on a frozen lake. In 1981 a Baku, Azerbaijan-based Su-15 deliberately rammed an Iranian Canadair CL-44 after it strayed into Soviet airspace.[1] More notorious was the Korean Air Flight 007 incident in 1983, when a Korean Boeing 747 was shot down by a Su-15TM based on Sakhalin, killing all 246 passengers and 23 crew [1].

Although it was produced in large numbers (1,290 of all types), the Su-15, like other highly sensitive Soviet aircraft, was never exported to the Warsaw Pact or any other country. Some Su-15 were deployed in Egypt in 1972 but were used with Soviet crews.

In Russia, the Su-15 was abruptly retired in 1993 to comply with the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. Most were hastily scrapped in favour of more advanced interceptors, including the Su-27 'Flanker' and MiG-31 'Foxhound.' In Ukraine, the last Su-15s (at Kramatorsk and Belbek) were withdrawn from use in 1996.

  • It makes me remid the F-105, may be the lines it has... But nice russian beast!

Thanks for share it with us!

  • @BitnikGr You should have watched this vid more carefully. It has no integrated gun, but it has installed autocannon and gun-pods. More to add first modifications of Phantom II (that it should be compared to) had no guns/cannons at all. Hope now you will like it :)

Other factor are already known,Su-15 are faster 2.5 Mach, and F-14 top speed is Mach 2.34!

According to the manufacturer's specifications,Su-15 armed can go up to 2.1 Mach.

    F-14 are much slower,only 1.88 Mach.

Thrust to Weight ratio is simmilar, for Su-15 is 0.90,and for F-14 is 0.91.

But Sukhoi Su-15 Thick and very Small wing will produce less induced drag than a wing of F-14 (Despite variable-sweep wing Configuration).

    G Limits are Simmilar,for F-14 Max is 6.5G.

    for Su-15 is 6G

Engine for Sukhoi Su-15,Tumansky R-13 (Turbojet) Have Low Bypass Ratio 0.46. - 0.437 . (this means that there is less air resistance and friction in the engine core) and Pressure ratios are 9.5:1

That means that Engine Consume decent amount of Fuel, and have a Slower "Subsonic" Acceleration

but when Turbines Spool up,Engine Efficiency at Supersonic Speeds Improve Dramatically.

And Turbojet engine continue to speed up,where the Turbofan engine has already stopped.

  • @Spadadiforza

I will love to see this video,do you have a Link?.

First,it is Practicly Impossible that F-14 can chase Su-15 at "Supersonic speeds"

    Becouse of several factors!

F-14 (Turbofan) engines GE F-110,have a High Bypass Ratio 0.85 (0,9) and pressure ratios are 29.9:1 - 30.4:1,and that mean that their Efficiency at Supersonic speeds and at High Altitudes drastically Decline!

Good for Fuel Efficiency and Subsonic acceleration but..

Older Turbofan engine for F-14A (P&W T-30) are even worse

    -------------

There is Video on here of US F14's getting behind an SU15 and kept it in its sights even with SU15 with afterburners on.

  • @BitnikGr

    Gun - none,It's Happens :/

Many Aircrafts from 60s suffer from the same engineering misconceptions.

    F-4 fantom is best example.

    ...

Later Soviets developed provision for UPK-23-250 gun pod,for Su-15TM (NATO "Flagon-E")

Generaly Speaking Su-15 is High Speed Interceptor, capable for 2.5 Mach (Clean) and 2.1 Mach Armed.

In Supersonic range of Speeds, even today there is no such plane in western Hemisphere that could Chase Su-15!

In Acceleration Su-15 is only suprassed by Mig-25 and Mig-31
