Enrico Caruso (born Errico Caruso; February 25, 1873 August 2, 1921). This is a perfect example of a tenor with completely developed and coordinated registers who also knew how to cover correctly. Listen to how "fine" the EE and EH vowels are, but also how in the end the OH vowels go towards more OO as he approaches the passaggio to properly cover. He doesn't lose any core or brilliance to the sound. It is also one of the very few recordings where Caruso does a diminuendo.

I'm getting flashbacks of Big Jim Colosimo getting gunned down while listening to this. Man, that was a POWERFUL scene. Now I'm a fan of Enrico Caruso, thanks to Boardwalk Empire.

@Kievest You have great empathy - just like Caruso ! You say what I also experience. The genious of Caruso is BEING the role - he fogot himself - his own ego - and just sang as the character. I think this is a unique ability that few singers have had / have. In other creative arts like films one can find similar abilities e.g. Dustin Hofmann in Rain Man.

I love Bjorling's singing of this aria, but Caruso's is something truly special--such emotional intensity and caressing warmth. One of the great tenor's masterpieces.
