It turned out that the compression was too low because the intake valves were leaking caused by bad adjustment. The valves were severely damaged by escaping heat from the combustion, so i ended up replacing the whole engine/gearbox assembly. The old engine had 450.000 kilometers on it, but the bearings, piston rings, camshaft, valve lifters etc. still looked like new.
