Shown is the basic working of wind turbine generators. The actual inner-workings are very complex and vary from turbine to turbine.
Currently many areas are utilizing the renewable energy of wind to power homes and businesses, and many more areas have to potential. Wind will most likely not supplement a countries grid energy needs, but it can and is making a significant impact. Some businesses and houses run almost completely on wind energy and can even create enough excess energy to sell back to the power companies. I did an entire college term paper on wind power just by watching this video.......of course, I go to a community college so that might explain things a bit

@p0lyamorous he doesn't completely describe the generation system. You may remember from high school physics that when a magnet moves through a coil of wires, it induces electricity. This electricity is then carried through wires, and other electronic gear onto the electric grid. It is efficient because although there is substantial upfront cost to make a turbine, it is FAR cheaper than a coal power plant, and the wind inputs are practically infinite, and free.

Energy is not free. By sticking windmills up into the air stream we are creating drag against the earth thus slowing it down. Excessive use will eventually lead to the day becoming longer (25 or 26 hours) adding to the time we must work thus demanding more energy and trying to extract it from a diminishing source. Soon the earth comes to a stop and we go to war over who has the light side vs. who has the dark side.
