Kenneth Anger, avant-garde filmmaker and author of the infamous Hollywood Babylon series, discusses "The Wickedest Man in the World," Aleister Crowley. A British occultist, hedonist, and author, Crowley inspired a fanatical following in the 20th century through his occult writings.

@elgaed69 @elgaed69 @elgaed69 Crowley was basically a Tibetan Buddhist. Unfortunately, he was also very fond of appearing sinister in public, and of making himself seem uncredible and fearsome. e.g. he took on the number 666 and called himself 'The Beast' in order to illustrate the extremely dangerous and potentially evil character of guruship.

@elgaed69 Doing 'what thou wilt' means breaking through the shells of distracting volition that prevent you from expressing your inner being. Crowley was simply borrowing the age-old idea of the spirit-teaching that a human being is not actually ever evil in his inner nature, but must control the outer being in order to express this inner nature. The outer being refers to the ego and the operant conditioned subconsciousness. The inner being refers to the spiritual self.

Crowley's law has nothing to do with 'doing what you want'. It doesn't even say 'want', but 'will'. There is a difference in English. To will is to resolve to do something, to determine that something shall be. To want is just to desire. In fact, Crowley practised strict meditational and ascetic techniques in order to completely dominate and control the mere 'wanting' volition.
