This is a very interesting interview with David Hockney, where he explains and demonstrates the use of camera obscuras and camera lucidas in the artwork of the Old Masters chronicled in his book Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters. 2 of 3
There is certainly another explanation why an artist would paint a near object out of focus as the basket....if he was far sighted. This is before glasses. Near objects look out of focus to me too.

Art-nazi. LOL. I think that hits the mark concerning the hate and vitriol directed at David Hockney. How far a stretch is it to assume that artists used these techniques earlier than we suspected? Jeez. Does it spoil your own imaginings of how these works were created. Get over art-nazis.

I think you're right David. Forget about the haters; they'll be there to claim you for "their country" second-hand, if you're proven correct, as it is for all innovators.

Art-nazi. It doesn't make the art less impressive or faschinating, it simply states that the technology existed and that it could be (and probably was to some extent) used.

it's not a lost secret Mr Hockney, it's just that you have not had an accomplished art education. A child discovering that the moon replaces the sun at night would create more interest. as they say "an empty bucket always the most noise".

my favorite hockney quote from his documentary: "so this great master traced the picture of the projection, and then they just filled in with paint". This sadly demonstrates what little grasp this man has on painting. of course, anyone has no historical knowledge of art, will be blown away by this man's words.
This man reveals his own ignorance by interpreting optical projection through his incompetent drawing abilities.

many times my paintings and my mothers as well gets stuff out of focus, this is simply because the canvas cant fit our motive.
