Music by Charles Mingus- "I can't get started"

This is not an authentic Goulash recipe. Just my version of what I'd like Goulash to be. Goulash

-Olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 package of stewing beef
- 1 onion chopped into large chunks
- 4 cloves garlic roughly chopped
- 2 potatoes chopped into large cubes
- 2 heaping tablespoons of Hungarian Sweet Paprika
- 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
- 2 1/2 cups of water
- 1/2 cup sour cream

Equipment: A slow cooker or a heavy-duty pot.

Directions:
- Get a pot very hot with oil. Salt and pepper the beef and sear on both sides until browned.
- Add the garlic and onions and saute about 2 minutes.
- Add the paprika and cook 1 minute.
- Add the tomato paste and cook 1 minute.
- Add the water and some more salt.
- Add this mixture and the potatoes to a crock pot (slow cooker). Cook it on low for about 4 hours (every crock pot is different with timing so check the users manual)
- If you are cooking it in a heavy-duty pot on the stove, simply lower the flame to low and cook for around two hours. Give it a stir every half hour.
- When the meat is very tender and the potatoes are completely cooked through, add the sour cream and mix.
- Serve with noodles, rice, bread, whatever! Enjoy!

  • Just to let you know that Goulash is cooking in the slow cooker now. I added an Indian touch to it (cumin, coriander powder, turmeric) and added beets along with carrots and potatoes and lots of chillies LOL ..so now waiting for it to be ready so I can taste it and send you a picture of it @!!

  • @Mysticsoul108 Awesome! That sounds sooooo good!! Thanks for sending me the picture too :)

  • Thanks so much for responding. You will be glad to know that I just acquired a Breville slow cooker and for it's inauguration I have chosen your recipe. I'll tweak it just a tad and will let you know how it turned out.

  • @Mysticsoul108 Awesome! I'm so excited to here how your version turns out :)

  • Love the recipe and your cooking tips for the slow cooker. Wonder if one can add vegetable or borscht broth to the goulash instead of plain water. And wonder if one can add carrots and beets to it also ?!

  • @Mysticsoul108 You can totally add those things. Those are great options as well because they're still popular root vegetables you would find in Hungarian food. It wouldn't be "traditional" But it would certainly be delicious so who cares!
