This is the final portion of Dr. Eli Newberger's lecture given at the opening session of the White House Conference on Helping America's Children," Washington, D.C. on October 27, 2005. The first part is called "Louis Armstrong's Boyhood Path from Delinquency to Musical Mastery," on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r43hWj9Qw8Q
The full written text, along with references, can be read here http://www.elinewberger.com/white_house_presn.html The 5 most important things we can do to prepare a boy to make the right choices in the face of daily moral challenges, where he must reconcile his own desires and impulses against the needs and rights of others (in other words, where his character is
revealed) are: 1. Assure that there is at least one adult in his life who is crazy about him, who will constantly
assure him of his worth and their love, place priority on his communications, never abandon him, and advocate for him
when needed, 2. Teach him to use words to characterize and express emotions, 3. Protect him from exposures to violence,
4. Provide opportunities for him to give back. 5. Use inductive discipline. These lessons derive from Eli Newberger's research and clinical experience, described in the book The Men They Will Become: The Nature and Nurture of Male Character (Perseus Books). Simultaneously with its publication, Stomp Off Records released a music CD with Butch Thompson on piano and clarinet, Jimmy Mazzy on banjo and vocals, and Eli on tuba and piano, with the title The Men They Will Become:
Jazz Takes on Male Character. To listen to several of its songs, please follow this link: http://www.elinewberger.com/music_listen.html
