Typography installation project.
Flagler College Fall Semester 2010.
Our assignment was to choose and design a word that describes design and typography. We began by choosing a word - "Connect" - and then decided to use PVC pipe to act as the pixel to construct the word.
We chose "Connect" because we feel that typography and design is everywhere, and it connects everything to everyone. You never realize how much typography connects everything to your life throughout your day. But what is typography? It's the road signs on your way to work, the layout of your magazine, the movie poster hanging at the theater, the brand name on your clothing. Typography is everywhere; connecting the world.
We chose 1/2" PVC as our object, cut into 1" pieces, with three set up as a triangle as the actual pixel, because what is the purpose of PVC pipe? To connect to something else. We just felt that it was perfect.
In the end, we used roughly 1800 PVC pieces, 7 cans of PVC glue, approximately 10 hours of construction time, and 4 hours of video editing.
We set up our installation on the First Friday Art Walk in downtown St. Augustine on October 1, 2010. The point of this was to interact with the general public and to spread the message of typography to them.
Song: "Triple Trouble" by the Beastie Boys. We did not record and are not in any way connected to them - we just like the song!
