Gareth has been involved with GALYIC (Gay and Lesbian Youth in Calderdale) for several years. Here is a short film in which he talks about the homophobic bullying he experienced at school.

Once he became a member of GALYIC, Gareth attended the youth group regularly as well as our annual residentials and also became a member of our Presentation Group which gives presentations to schools and agencies about what it is like being a young gay person.

  • I don' get this notion of coming out. If parents family and friend are attentive to their child/family member/friend then this notion of coming out wouldn't need to occur.

And to note, the recent gay suicides is nothing new. Unless a parent is willing to share with the authorities that their child could be or is a fag it is noted as another teen suicide. The numbers grow decade in and decade out, its been an issue for what seems like ...ever.

I agree it has been an issue forever, but it seems to be getting worse, as LGBT young people identify at a younger age and homophobic bullying is rife in schools.

The coming out process is more about our own internal acceptance so whilst accepting parents and friends can make a HUGE difference, it is how we feel about ourselves that is critical.

  • @beatriceward Without a doubt what you have said is completely true.

I just feel that it plays into difference. In a few decades/1000's of years people won't bother and the reason why they won't bother to 'come out' is what i'm interested in and talking about.
