Hamilton police have released a video of a woman wanted in connection with at least a dozen purse snatchings across the city in recent weeks. Police say the woman has been approaching female seniors at city grocery and retail stores where she distracts them by asking a question are asking for help in finding on item. While the shopper is distracted the woman steals the wallet from the shoppers purse, usually sitting in a shopping buggy or basket, or sometimes takes the purse itself. Police say the woman and a male accomplice have struck at Mountain Plaza Mall, Value Village on Fennell Avenue, Sobeys and Zellers in the Ancaster Medowlands, Metro on Upper James and possibly the Metro at University Plaza in Dundas. Police are looking for a white female 30-50 years of age with an eastern European accident, possibly Hungarian. She has a slim to medium build, wears glasses and earrings and has black curly hair usually worn in a ponytail. During the thefts she had been carrying a black sweater draped over one arm. Police say the woman has been using stolen credit cards to buy gift cards at area gas bars. Surveillance video of the woman shopping at an area convenience store can be viewed in the Multimedia section of the Mountain News website.
