"Well, ma'am, not just YOUR son, both of these boys. Apparently, Mr. Linley here is under the impression that his record company stole a song he wrote and gave it to another artist, passing it off as if one of the lyricists for the company wrote it."

"THEY DID STEAL....."

"CODY! Not now," Mrs. Jonas said. "Please continue, Officer."

"Thank you," he said, giving Cody a dirty look. "So the "nice" man that found them last night was actually the president of the record company, and Joe and Cody didn't fight. He knocked both of them out and then broke Cody's leg."

"Oh my goodness! Well, we definitely cannot stay here then," Mrs. Jonas said.

"Ma'am, not to worry. I've contacted a friend in the FBI, and he's agreed to put both your families in the Witness Protection Program."

"THE WPP?!" Joe said. "NO! Mom, I promise we'll be fine. I'll protect you!"

"JOSEPH, not another word! Now, we are doing this for your safety, so I don't want to hear another word."

"BUT MOM! They put you in such a remote location with nothing to do for fun!" Joe whined.

"Oh, I think you'll like this one," the officer said, smiling. "By the way, you two will be put in two separate locations, and the only people that will know where both of you are are the FBI Agents that place you there. You'll be given new last names, new cell phones......basically new identities."

"Separated?" Cody said softly, and turned to the officer. "But Joe's my best friend! he yelled. Has been since we were two! We've never been separated like this! And no communication between us?!"

"I think a separation would be good for us," Joe said softly.

Cody slowly turned back around to Joe and gave him a betrayed look. "Oh. You do, do you? Thanks a lot buddy. Now I know what my friendship REALLY meant to you."

"Cody, come on, don't be like that," Joe said, trying to get off the bed to get to him, but Mrs. Jonas held him back. "CODY! DON'T LEAVE!" Joe yelled, struggling against his mother.

Cody stopped at the doorway when he heard Joe yell. He sighed. "I'm sorry I got you into this, Joe. But, I just want you to know, if the situation had been reversed.....I would've gone with you, too. Thanks for trying," Cody said softly, and left Joe's room without looking back.

The room was silent until they couldnt hear the THUMP! of Cody's crutches anymore. "Joe...." Mrs. Jonas said softly. "I know this is hard for you....."

"NO!" Joe yelled, pulling away from his mother. "YOU have NO IDEA how hard this is. Cody's my BEST FRIEND! He's the closest thing to a brother I have! And he's right, we've never been separated like this. How am I going to survive something new WITHOUT HIM?!"

"Get a grip, Joe," the officer said. "You're a nice guy, I'm sure you'll make new friends wherever you go."

"I DON'T WANT NEW FRIENDS!" he yelled.

"Maybe we should leave," the officer suggested to Mrs. Jonas. "This is obviously a lot for him to accept all at once. If you want to come down to the station, you can meet with the FBI Agent who will be taking you to your new location."

"Well...." Mrs. Jonas said, staring worriedly down at Joe.

"Please go, Mom," Joe said, staring wide-eyed at the wall. "I really just want to be alone right now."

Mrs. Jonas sighed. "Okay honey. I'll be back later with your Dad. I love you."

"Love you, too," he whispered as she kissed his forehead. She sighed again and then walked out with the officer.

[Joe's POV]
Relocated. Witness Protection Program. Separation. All these words were running through my head; I just couldn't wrap my mind around it. I'm already in a different country, so me recognizing any name of the place they put me in isn't going to be a problem. I was struck by a sudden thought. What are Kevin and Nick going to think? My bandmates in our group, Jonas Brothers. We're not related, but we thought it was funny that we all had the same last name and we act like brothers. I guess now the group will have to break up if it doesnt have one of its lead singers; I mean, Nick could still go solo, but Kevin doesn't have a strong enough voice to do that. I sighed. And Cody.....my best friend Cody, ever since we were little, we were always getting ourselves into trouble. This was more than either of us had expected. I TOLD Cody to wait until the next day and then we could go and talk to the artist that supposedly had the song that was stolen from Cody and tell her it was stolen; if she was like any normal person, she would just give it back to him and balk at the thought of recording someone else's song. Cody said she wasn't like that though, she was a stuck-up diva who was only out for number one. I sighed. Not unlike some artists at my record.....oops, I mean my former record company. Crap, England's going to be in chaos, or at least the teenage girls will once they find out I've basically dropped off the face of the planet. Maybe the FBI could keep the story from leaking.
