In Search of Carlotta (Mission Dolores Cemetery)

A short 58-second video on the cemetery at San Francisco's Mission Dolores. This is where Hitchcock filmed the scenes in Vertigo where Johnny (played by Jimmy Stewart) follows Madeleine (Kim Novak) to Mission Dolores where she visits the grave of Carlotta, the woman who is believed to have possessed her. I'm currently doing pre-production on a documentary on the cemetery, its colorful history and characters. The headstone inscriptions have not weathered well and barely illegible; however, the inscriptions have been archived. The Mission hopes eventually to install the complete inscriptions side by side the gravestones. One of the more "colorful" inscriptions is the one to a man's mistress who had been a "madam" of a Barbary Coast "house."
