Voting in Elections P1

From the main contemporary scholars such as Sheikh Ibn Baz (May Allah have mercy upon him) they did not consider elections in and of themselves haram. Many people confuse voting which is a form of selection, with endorsement. Selecting a candidate from a number of candidates does not mean that you endorse all the candidates' principles, beliefs and views. In many cases by voting you are selecting the lesser of two evils. It also does not mean that you endorse all the principles of western democracy. In fact selecting a candidate who represents the lesser of two evils has nothing to do with creed (Aqeedah) or faith (Emaan).

The scholars unanimously agree that one of the main purposes of the shariah is to maximise the benefit and minimise the evil, and eliminate it if possible. Selecting a candidate in an election is simply a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils.

"Fear Allah as much as you can"

Most scholars agree this verse is an indication to fear Allah to the best of your ability. In some situations you may not be able to avoid the haram in which case the lesser of two evils must be chosen.

In reality there is really no such thing as abstaining from voting. By abstaining you will indirectly help the leading candidate hence there are some candidates who favour a low voter turnout.

  • its not to do with religion at all.

، ليس له علاقة بالدين على الإطلاق

  • VOTING IN KUFR SYSTEMS IS HARAM !

Stop listening to this person here !

Asta3hfirullah ! Ask Allah for forgiveness oh 'Sheikh'....

Democracy is where man put up the rules, where man governs. Islam is where Allah put up the rules, and Allah governs the Muslims.

By voting you are comitting shirk.

  • My only regret is that Muhammad is not alive for me to shit on. Silly little prophetcunt.

  • imedia- "Selecting a candidate from a number of candidates does not mean that you endorse all the candidates' principles, beliefs and views..." As muslims we are not permitted to engage in haram nor are we allowed to elect someone to do haram on our behalf. We muslims have become so engrossed in the capitalistic way of life that we start to consolidate islam to other beliefs wether it be for religious, cultural or political reasons- the purity of islam is slowly being unrecognizable.

  • the word "selecting" cracked me up. the brother failed to explain how it is halal. im also quite amazed that he said the voting had nothing to do with aqeedah. isnt one of the tennents of tawheed to completely believe in ALLAH and not to ascribe partners to him.?

  • by watching the brother i have not been convinced at all. moreover the brothers who say its is haram have much more proof and evidence. notice throughtout the whole video the shiekh rarely quotes ayat or even a hadith.

  • Lesser evil is only when faced with two evils and forced to do one.

  • a discussion/debate between the two sides of voting held on 01/05/10 in london. A Panel discussion with Ustadh Kamal Abu Zahra, Shaykh Sulaiman Ghani and Dr Abdul Wahid. before watching it please remember that evidence from quran, sunnah, ijma of the sahabas and qiyas is the way that we maintain that our deen stays pure. to watch the debate click on elections 2010 on the hizb uk website.
