Interesting maybe, I wouldn't say enjoyable or listenable in any way though.

Ah, but there you're wrong. Because there wasn't silence. You could hear the rustling of the crowd, the mumbles and coughing: All the sounds that a musician doesn't intend to be in a piece. But John did, and that's why it's wonderful.

music is defined as "sound organized in time." His sound chosen was silence. His time chosen was 4'33". He's messing with the pure definition of music. It's genius.

I am a big fan of minimalist, ambient and mood music, but this is pretenious nonsense. You can't pull something completely out of left field and call it "art" just because nobody has done it before. For me it has to have substance to back it up. I suppose it is an interesting concept, but you can't really compare it against great minimalist works.

It's a pitty to see how people are prejudiced and arrogant saying they could "perform" this very piece and win money by "doing nothing". People who think like that misunderstand the true meaning of music and its importance to a society as disgusting as ours.

The importance of the song relys on its ideas, not the musical quality we are used to analyse. To create such piece, intelligence and creativity are required from the composer and also from the audience, which has to interpretate it.

really interesting piece!

Our society should give more importance to silence and its benefits. We have forgotten what is to do nothing, everything has to have a purpose in order to be considered "worthy" and we are always on the move (generally working uncountable hours).

Music is a subjective concept and also an artistic expression, so it really depends on the audience's interpretation rather than (only) the artist's creativity...

I think I understand the point of the piece, and it has value. The wiping of the brow between the 1st and 2nd movement kinda took away from it. Also, the generous applause and multiple curtain calls seem a little silly. Granted it was the last piece of the program but neither the performers or conductor did anything worthy of applause. If you are going to play this, let it be what it is: an observation and appretiation of silence. The program should inform the audience to not applause after.
