This is kind of sad because you can tell the police officers have a great bond with the dogs and then can you imagine what would happen when they dogs died :(

Belive me german shepherds are men's best friends making dogs fight for fun isnt right there alive they can feel bad they are not protective dogs you might make a realy good friendship your dog will protect you and you must protect your dog!

my father was a k9 officer for 15 years that dog was part of my family and proteched us so well one time my father took us out to eat and he went to pick up the food and a man tryed to get in the cop car but as soon as major seen him putting his hand in and tryed to hurt us he made sure this man didnt i miss him so much

@Silkfox my dog is a police k9, im 18 years old and my dad is a k9 cop, my dog, king is twelve, he retired when he was 9. the day he dies i will cry very hard and am not afraid to say it. king's been my boy since i was in kindergarten. basically to answer your question, the police dog will retire and live with his partner until his death. the relationship between the dog and family is legit, just like a brother.

@GottaLoveMe962 I was holding my first partner, Sabre, when he died and I cried like a baby. The bond between a handler and his K-9 is something you have to experience and cannot be put into words.
