Richmond Punch has a strong desire to give back to those who have helped him succeed. And that's exactly what he did on July 21 at Children's.

The 28-year-old classically-trained Juilliard and Yale-educated musician performed a concert for the patients, employees and volunteers at the hospital. But that's not all he did. Punch, once a patient himself, encouraged the children to pursue their dreams.

"Music is something kids can do for the rest of their lives," Punch said. "Whether it's playing an instrument or even just singing along to the radio, a passion for music can be very healing."

Before becoming a musical mastermind, Punch underwent surgery at only 3 days old to remove an extra finger on his hand, and again at age 15 when he injured two fingers. Little did his surgeons know what the fingers they were mending would later accomplish and give back to the community.

A south Dallas native, Punch and his mom, Gayle, founded the Punch Family Foundation and the Dallas Uptown Youth Orchestra which gives training and scholarships to young musicians. Punch also plays with the Richmond Punch Jazz Quartet and Mistura String Quartet. He has received multiple scholarships, awards and honors, and has performed with acclaimed artists such as pianist and composer Marvin Hamlisch.

"We want children to know about violins, violas and cellos just like they know about football," Gayle said. "Richmond had the privilege of experiencing the power of music from an early age because of the doctors at Children's who invested in him and the people who support the hospital."
