That has nothing to do with pronunciation or language skills. Matter of fact, ThL's pronunciation is more French-like whereas BY has a noticeable Indochinoise accent. But that's part of BY's charm; besides the French find accents appealing. The difference btw the 2 is that BY has voice expression of a storyteller when she sings in French & ThL concentrates too much on pronunciation which takes away any "naturalness" to the song. You get what I'm saying?

Bach Yen, on the other hand, was already a major star in her native Vietnam but took the gamble of broadening her career abroad. It isn't so pointless to compare Thanh Lan with her, because BY & ThL both share similar career backgrounds- both had learned French while in VN & sang in French perfectly before either one had lived abroad. (so the fact that BY now lives in France and ThL never has didn't matter then or even now) BY's naturalness when singing in French is her god-given talent...

TL's french is not that natural, she has great pronunciation but when she sings you can tell she's not a native and has the antics of a vietnamese singer. When BY sings with her western european stage presence, you can imagine she's a native in some sort of french speaking country, despite her Indochinoise accent. The fact that Bach Yen has lived in france for so many years really instills more frenchness and it shows in her speaking, singing, and antics. She's a true pioneer and a legend.
