Living with tobacco-related diseases and the devastating effects of tobacco use take center stage in the latest creative from truth®, the nation's largest smoking prevention campaign for youth.

"Unsweetened truth" is a new commercial from truth, directed by Harvest's Baker Smith, that vividly illustrates the impact of smoking on health. In the spot, six real people suffering from tobacco-related disabilities are featured on a parade float traveling through the heart of Hollywood. As the float travels along, spectators can see the obvious physical disabilities each person is living with. They can also hear the half-dozen participants "singing" a tune about the many different flavors used to enhance tobacco products. It can be viewed here: thetruth.com.

While the American public may commonly connect tobacco use with often fatal diseases such as lung cancer and heart attacks, an estimated 8.6 million people in the United States are living with serious illnesses attributed to smoking. For many, it means suffering on a daily basis, and drastic changes from their pre-disease lifestyles.

The spot highlights a new fact: "Tobacco companies can't sell candy-flavored cigarettes, but they still sell other tobacco products in over 45 candy flavors." With this spot, truth seeks to highlight how living with tobacco-related diseases is not just about dying; having such diseases is also about living with the effects of cancers of the mouth, throat and neck; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); emphysema; and loss of voice. Moreover, anyone who uses tobacco has the potential to develop such diseases.

  • I think they just got these people to scare them, I'm scared and I guess their deformities will get your attention. But, it was funny when those people did get shocked and scared.

  • I'm not a smoker. I've smoked many times and each time it repulses me. With that said. I don't think these are being marketed to kids. Why can't candy flavored tobacco be appealing to adults? I think the truth people are just coming up with new things. like the cigarette ads. They're a company with a product. Of course they're going to advertise.

  • Wtf?

  • 0:11 - Dunkin' Donuts is going to kill her before cigarettes do. I even think they airbrushed a maple bar out of her hand.

  • I don't know which is worse. Commercials telling you to do things, or commercials telling you not to do things. Smoking a cigarette won't kill you, kids. Smoking 10 packs a day just might. It's ok to eat a piece of cake every know and again, but shit if you eat a whole cake a day, yeah you're going to die early.

  • obviously wintergreen is the best flavor

  • I agree with mcgheedaniella, even among all 'the truth' commercials, this one bothered me the most. Nerofiend you're a moron. The reason they don't want people making sweet cancer sticks is because while you are stupid enough to decide to smoke, they don't want the added temptation for children who aren't mature enough to make the decision to have a few minutes of pleasure for a possible lifetime of suffering later. Usually I'm not a 'think of the children' type, but with this stuff I agree.

  • @9brain5 me too!

  • @nerofiend Right on! Agree with everything you said. I'm all for letting effects of things being known but banning products is bullshit. Just make the consequences of selling or providing tobacco products to underage kids more extreme. No reason to ruin a good thing for the rest of us. I know full well what smoking cigarettes can do to me and I would love to smoke a vanilla cigarette.
