Silent Night - Mannheim Steamroller (Official Music Video - 1984)

Christmas 1984 is the first holiday album the Mannheim Steamroller released, and it remains their definitive work. Chip Davis never strayed from the clean, airy instrumental style that he exhibits here (and earlier perfected on his Fresh Aire albums), but it is here where it all sounded fresh. It's also where he had his best selection of songs, tackling a variety of classic carols like "Deck the Halls," "We Three Kings," "Good King Wenceslas," "Wassail, Wassail," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "I Saw Three Ships," and of course, "Silent Night." Some listeners never found the Mannheim formula that engaging, but anyone who his been captured by one of their holiday records should investigate Christmas 1984, which is where it all began.

I think sooner or later, the Christmas season brings sadness along with joy. This song best expresses that feeling. The ending always reminds me of angels taking my loved ones home to heaven.

I'm so stressed out right now and I swear, Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music is the only things that cures it. I cry when I hear this because I miss Christmas so much. This music...I've just never heard any Christmas music like it. It's so unique.

Best version of Silent Night ever -- and one that always brings tears to my eyes. The minor chords, the violin solo, the piano background ... it all adds up to a nostalgic piece that tugs at the heartstrings. And the toy piano at the end must remind anyone who's ever lost a child (or even a beloved pet) of happier Christmases past.
