Pull up the pic of the whole Earth of Google Earth, then take a good look at the Pacific, paying attention to the rim all the way around it. You'll see this already happened, and it appears as though Earth lost a sizable chunk of crust a long, long time ago. This wound is likely the cause for plate tectonics on this planet (crust splitting and moving to "heal" the wound).
