Vladimir Vysotsky: people shone when they stood next to him

On January 25 Russia celebrates the 70th anniversary since the birth of probably the most popular figure of Russian culture of the second half of the 20th century. Vladimir Vysotsky, who died untimely in 1980, was a poet, actor and interpreter of his own songs. Thousands of Muscovites left the stadiums (as it was the time of the Olympic Games) to attend the funeral. It was later estimated that over one million people attended Vysotsky's funeral, almost as many as that of Pope John Paul II in 2005. Vladimir's son, Nikita is in our studio to tell us about his father.

i'm a fan of Vysotsky's so i'm biased. as Nikita mentions, there are many discussions taking place, all of them absurd. so let me throw in my two cents and try to help westerners who seem to need an analogy to understand things: Vystosky is Russia's Shakespeare

There seems to be no equivalent to Vysotsky anywhere else in the world, certainly not in the US, my native country. To develop and appreciate an artist like Vysotsky a nation or a people has to have a soul. The US has no soul, at least not one that it wishes to acknowledge. It values only money, paying no attention to matters of the soul. You are lucky to have had such an artist in your midst, and wise to have revered him while he was alive. He was a flawed human being, but still great.

@ortsx1o Vysotsky was junky, alcoholic, yes, he also was genius and the symbol of honesty and honor. There is a great lot of junk all over the world, though, the people -leaders of this junk, greediness, pettiness, murders, blood and martyrdoms are not junkies, but they are world's dirt and should be washed out of the face of this planet. It is, of course, impossible to wash out the evilness, but it is possible to show in comparison how stupid and bloody it is. And I've done many of such shows.
