JUST BECAUSE ANY DOG CAN LEARN ANYTHING DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE SHOULD TRAIN THEM ALL THE SAME.
The coming of a beautiful female Rottie gives me the opportunity to talk about pack structure. And mostly to mention how important it is to know the position in the social group before starting the training of a dog. Dog have a function in a pack that function is based on the personality and abilities. Some things they are good at some they are not. Paying attention to their function amongst other dogs give us the opportunity to choose carefully what we teach them.

  • But I wonder, when picking my first dog, how can I know his function in the pack when choosing or buying a puppy

  • @angerfistzalig Interestingly enough very early on dogs have a very clear sense of who they are and their function in the pack. Puppies are generally bought and brought home around 8 weeks old, at this point you can already easily observe their natural inclination. If you move fast among them, who comes and bites your shoe laces? Who sees that happening and then decides to come and bite at them? Who runs away because you move too fast etc...

    Thanks for commenting.

  • @chriscreateharmony1 if i want a personal protection dog, do i need to take the pack leader?

  • @angerfistzalig Any dog that you take proper care off will stand for you regardless of his pack function. That said ( and I am jot saying it is your case, I totally respect your question) if someone would come to me for some help getting a protection dog I would very cautiously observe the person's life before even suggesting the idea of owning a dog. Fear is what generates the need for protection in humans. Dogs have no clue how to deal with human fear. Human fear always leads to dog issues.
