Carey Beebe ghosting the 4´ quills.

Precise regulation demands that all the quills of a register are cut to the correct length. The easiest way to determine this is to "ghost" the quills.

The 4´ (middle) register is backed off slightly with two pieces of card at its ON side. Each quill can then be accurately cut to length in turn so that it just brushes very lightly past the string when played, producing a ghost-like sound. Careful listening to this short example will reveal that the b and c' must be trimmed further because they are still long enough to produce a definite pluck rather than an ethereal ghost.
