My "new" [to me] boat. Please help!

I figured out how to hook up the tach to the non-stock CDI that doesn't have a tach circuit. As it turns out, the engine would cut out due to over revving. It would rev up past 6,000 RPM; the max suggested operating RPM is 5,500.
It is strange though, that it is revving up too high. It has the steepest prop available that's listed in the manual - a 19". Weird.

I got it from my brother. It's one of those apparently Evinrude-esque type hulls. It's an Ankor-Craft by Scott. Not exactly sure of the year. The engine is a Chrysler 105.

There are a few problems with it. First is that at close to WOT, the engine dies after a few seconds. I found a kink in the fuel vent hose. I got a 90 degree elbow and put that in there; no more kink. I checked the fuel filter; it was pretty clean (it wouldn't have starved the engine for fuel.

I'm starting to think maybe it's an electrical problem. When it dies, you can throw it in neutral and it starts right beck up immediately.

The second problem is the transom. The center (where the bottom engine mounts are) looks concave. The edges (by the gunwales) is flat. Inside the transom, it looks like someone has already reinforced it with a piece or two of fiberglass cloth, which has peeled away from the transom a little bit. Does anybody know what the stock transom shape on this boat is?

The third problem (for now) is reverse. It shifts into forward just fine. Going to neutral from forward, I need to bump it a little past neutral to get it out of gear. Then going in to reverse, the gear shift lags. It will eventually go in to reverse, but the throttle is up a bit by that time and the engine jumps very badly catching on reverse and jumping back out. Does anybody know how or where to adjust that?

I'm going to order a Clymer for it very soon, but any help in the meantime would be great. Thanks!

  • Dont know if you have already fixed the motor or not, but my johnson outboard did the same thing to me ended up being a check valve in fuel feed hose sucked the primer bulb flat. i had to check right away because it would return to normal in a few seconds I replaced the fuel feed hose after puting lots of money into new fuel pump carb kits. ended up bieng $15 fuel hose

  • Could be that the wooden core in the transom is rotting or rotten. I have cut the the inside fiberglass out around the edges , keeping it in one piece and replaced the wood with new, then glass taped the removed fiberglass back into place. Problems you could run into involve finding that more than just the transom core wood is rotten and that can get more involved .If it seems strong enough you might want to just leave it alone and keep an eye on it. to check for rot drill hole from inside .

  • seems like a float is hanging up drop the bowls,carb cleaner to clean the bowls and into the jets, then get a separate tank aux tank from walmart about 30.bucks. run it with the fresh gas you put in the new tank .maybe there is something in the old tank.also make sure there are no cracks in the fuel line or the pump the one on the line,it needs to feel solid all of the time,they go bad ...worth a try.

  • get somebody to go with you next time and be running down the lake and when it goes to die out have somebody spray some carb cleaner into one of the carburators and see if it tries to stay running. If it does, then you have a fuel delivery problem (fuel filter, clogged carburators, fuel pump, etc.) If it doesn't help it try to stay running, then its an electrical/ignition problem.
