the sound, the pathos, the depth of beauty is beyond words

Semplicemente favolosa!

I love the ritornellos in baroque operas, esp. in Haendel's operas, the way the lines are woven into each other in a nice pattern.
And Dame Sutherland's Alcina is phenomenal. she is really involved and expressive here.

Although she couldn't (at the start of her caree) be siad to have been a good actress, she learnt.Yes,one could criticise her diction, but frankly I don't care,I just want to revel in the most glorious sound that she made.
I was lucky enough to be working at Covent Garden when she was singing, and a nicer and more natural person you couldn't meet.
I met her once more nearly 20 years later(I had retired by then)and she remembered me.
How's that for a star?

What more is there to say of Joan Sutherland that has not already been said.
Although she is no longer with us,perhaps we should take time to thank her husband Richard for giving us the Joan we know and love?
Within the young dark and lustrous dramatic soprano that Joan was he managed to hear a wonderful coloratura voice, and drew it forth. This is what made Joan so great,a dramatic bottom to the voice, melded to a lyric coloratura top.Add to this a great technique and lungs like a horse!

Magnificant. La Stupenda - the voice that saved my spirit as a child and teenager.

Magnificent, haunting and beautiful...what a magnificent talent and elegant women. x^,^x

Leitner is brilliant! the orchestra magnificent. However Sutherland is sublime.... she inspires conductor and orchestra to better things! There isn't anyone today who could sing this ever so beautifully. RIP madame Sutherland. You will be missed.

RIP Dame Joan. Thank you for the continued enchantment.

La Stupenda! Bel canto unequaled! The voice as music and art!!!
After listening to so many sopranos, since childhood in the 60's, I have never found any that are possess the distinct qualities of Sutherland. Most high sopranos don't have the rich middle, the spaciousness of sound, the bell-like tone, or the warm feeling of being connected to something earthy and utterly natural.

Isn't this amazing. I love Handel, I love the opera ALCINA and I love this haunting aria. And then to have one of the greatest Handelian singers of the 20th century sing it. Some things they just get right.
