November 5, 2011-Phillipsburg, NJ:
On a cool, November day, the Belvidere and Delaware River Railroad hosted a fundraiser for the Whippany Railroad Museum benefiting the restoration of their US Army 0-6-0 #4039. On this day, an all-day pass was sold for $22 as a "Railfan Special" for unlimited rides and several photo runbys on each trip, as well as admission to their night photo shoot, which we couldn't stay for. The power for the excursions was Bel Del's 2-8-2 Mikado #142, which sounded great, especially going track speed during the photo runbys, and sporting its melodic SP 6-chime steam whistle. Our conductor was fellow YouTube user hamstertrain18. CSX6000 was there as well, and Boberttrain831 and koasterkidd tagged along with me. We'll see the excursion reverse into Lehigh Junction, as well as three photo runbys with the 142. First is a runby near the Corn Maze, which an ignorant driver screwed up for everyone by driving right through everyone's shot. Then, we'll see the runby at the Carpentersville Road crossing. Finally, we got to go to the infamous Route 78 overpass. However, our luck wasn't so good with this spot. With no organized photo line at this spot, things didn't go as planned. Our ideal spot was taken when we exited the train, and our back-up spot was filled with other people as well. So we took the back-up spot and made the best of it. The shot wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for one tall weed stalk in the way. Anyway, for this runby, the whistle was changed to a CNJ 3-chime, which echoed very nicely through the Lehigh Valley. Enjoy this wonderful display of the might Mikado #142 and fall colors in the Lehigh Valley.
