We decide on a whim, to take on a technical slot-style Utah Canyon in December. With barely more than some rope to rappel with and our climbing shoes, we descended into a slot canyon that would end up taking us all night to get out of.
My wife and I did this canyon last September. We thought we were prepared for this adventrure eg. 2.5 litres of water each, protein bars, lots of food, Garmin GPS, wetsuits, helmets, 120 ft & 80 ft ropes, quicklinks, carbiners, etc. We were lucky to get out alive. We were climbing out in the dark. Do not do this if you are not an experienced canyoneer.
Canyoneering requires way more planning than trying it on a "whim". You are lucky you two didn't become another pair of dead bodys in a slot. No water, No food, no real gear, doesn't make the "guys with tons of gear" whoosie's, makes them alive and with good trip. The one's who don't bring it end up dead, or very, very lucky to have gotten out.
