  • good job rob. no collards?

  • There is always next year. I have never eaten them before so I was leary of trying them. I'm not so big a fan of cooked greens. I like to eat them raw in salads. I have been using spinach in place of lettuce for years, so when I found chard could be used in any way one uses spinach, I was overjoyed. I love the chard.

  • The dirt in my yard is super-heavy clay, so I didn't use it. I bought 16 yards of "triple mix". It was 50% topsoil, 40% compost and 10% flyash. I am sure that the quality varies year to year here and everywhere else. It seems to drain well and the roots go on forever. I have pulled radishes with 10 inch taproots and beets with 12 inchers. The carrots are long and straight, so I think I did ok with a starting soil. I intend to put some manure in this fall, but don't know what kind. Rob

  • i am loving the garden you are doing a great job!!! i will keep watching!!!!

  • Great looking pepper plants. Nice cucumber and zucchini. You had a good season.

  • Hey rob U need to try "tera perta" for your heavy clay.

what it is is mixing charcoal in the soil to bust up the clay. its used in south America and is said to work good.

  • Hi Rob,

Great garden you have there, all the hard work has been worthwhile.

Peppers - I was watering my peppers as often and as much as my tomatoes. I eased off and watered half as much and they improved. I think even less might be better.

Beans - I've discovered that my climbing beans do better at the north end of the bed than those at the south. I think beans like some shade so next year I'm going to try them beside a row of trees.

    Best Wishes,

    Brendan

  • Rob your garden looks fantastic! I had the same problems with my beans, one bean lol

Question, when you built your raised beds how did you fill it? Order dirt? a certain kind of soil? a combination of anything? Just curious, this years garden was horrible for us and Im trying to get how to fill the raised beds correctly because I have a feeling we didnt do ours right, can you help?
