Mario Lanza (1921-1959)
"You and the Night and the Music" (Schwartz-Dietz). Recorded for the December 17, 1951, broadcast of "The Mario Lanza Show", with studio orchestra conducted by Ray Sinatra.
Lawyer turned composer/film producer Arthur Schwartz may be best remembered for penning the song 'That's Entertainment', with lyricist Howard Dietz. Many years earlier, however, the duo had a hit with 'You and the Night and the Music', from the 1934 show "Revenge with Music".
The song is wonderfully melodic and memorable, and it surely benefits from the unbridled urgency Lanza brings to it. Although it seems his version is rarely mentioned in discussions of the singer's most-loved recordings, it has long been a favorite of mine and bears the hallmarks of Lanza's best work in the popular song genre: loads of romantic feeling, unaffected delivery, scrupulous attention to matters of shading and nuance, exemplary diction, and a wholehearted belief in the music and words he sang.

A lot of soul in this rendition of this beautiful composition. The melody and chords give the song a dark and emotional beauty. What a voice and sung with passion. I usually hear Jazz vocalist sing this or Jazz instrumentalists play it at medium or fast tempos. This slow version by Lanza, which I'm sure was the original tempo intended for the song and who is an operatic style singer, is one of my favorites. Thanks for posting!
